Bernice F. Owens, 94 of Grove St., Homer, passed away surrounded by her loving family on February 1, 2017 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center Nursing Facility. Mrs. Owens was born on June 5, 1922 in West Dryden, NY the daughter of the late Jessie and Edna Millage Hart.
Mrs. Owens had been a lifelong resident of the area. She was a graduate of Dryden High School. She enjoyed quilting, bowling, taking walks, and she loved baking for her family and being together with her family and friends. She was a past member of the N. Presbyterian Church in Cortland and had served as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher until the church closed. Mrs. Owens then became an active member of the United Presbyterian Church in Cortland, Mrs. Owens was a member of the Presbyterian Women, she volunteered her time making Pumpkin Pies for the annual Pumpkin Fest working on Church luncheons and serving the church on various committees throughout her many years as a church member. She retired in 1992 from the Preston Insurance Agency after 26 years of employment.
Mrs. Owens is survived by her two sons, Richard (Linda) Aylesworth of Homer and James (Gloria) Aylesworth of Ocala, FL. Her loving grandchildren Richard (Stacey) Aylesworth III, Kelly and Wendy Aylesworth, Kimberly (Michael MacPherson) Neal, Scott (Vicki) Hollenbeck, Jodi (Jerred) Peck and Jeff Court. Her sister Marjorie Fulton of Trumansburg and her sister-in-law Helen Hart of Cortland. Several beloved great grandchildren ,great great grandchildren and one great great great granddaughter born on Bernice's 90th birthday and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Owens was predeceased by her first husband Richard Aylesworth in 1958 and her second husband Harry Owens in 1987. Her eight brothers and one sister.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 4:00 PM at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Friends are invited to call on Saturday 2:00-3:45 pm prior to the funeral service. Interment will take place in the Glenwood Cemetery in Homer in the spring. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the United Presbyterian Church, Cortland.
