Obituary of Stephen M. Verfuss

Stephen M. Verfuss, 70, of Marathon NY, passed away April 28, 2017 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. He was born January 10, 1947 in Cortland the son of the late Clarence and Agnes Johnson Verfuss. Steve was raised and educated in Marathon graduating from Marathon High School in 1965. He joined the U.S. Airforce in 1966, served during the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged in 1969. He was employed with the Cortland County highway Dept. until 2002, then for the Village of Marathon until 2015. He was still actively working for Mac-Mara Holsteins in Marathon until his health prevented him from doing so. Steve spent many hours raking, bailing and tedding hay. He and Syd McEvoy would be seen every year at the county fairs preparing cows to be shown. He served as a life member of the Marathon Fire Dept. and was a past member of the Marathon American Legion. One of his greatest past times was watching his granddaughters at their sporting events. Steve took great pride in helping others and never asking for anything in return. He is survived by his daughter Darcie (Mike) Pendell of Marathon, his son Lucas (Erica) Verfuss of Florida, his sister Anne McEvoy, his brother Gary Robert (Carol) Verfuss, his granddaughters Alexandra, Hannah, Samantha, and Aliviah, along with several nieces and nephews, and his close friend Chuck McEvoy. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Irma Brown and William Verfuss. A celebration of his life will be held 12 noon Saturday May 6, at the Marathon American Legion, friends will be received from 11-12 prior to the celebration.
