I remember sitting in Mrs. Degear's math class....and you saying, "I don't understand!" I would get up, come over and help you, followed by getting kicked out of class...
That, believe it or not is one of my fondest memories of High School. I am now a Math teacher.

I finally got a chance to meditate on Melanie and let this loss sink in...
I hadn't spent time with her in person for a number of years but I loved her.
We were cousins, the same age.
I am so sorry for the heartbreak of losing her so young.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Melanie. She was one of the best people I ever knew, someone who "practiced what she preached" especially when it came to respecting others and practicing tolerance. She was truly a gift to us all, and her tremendous impact on those she helped will resonate for decades. Melanie touched our family's lives more than she could ever have known. The candle quote fit her through and through. Alex said he was sad and angry about the unfairness of her death. I too have had those feelings, but then I told my kids the best thing we could do was to try to be the kind of person Melanie was. Kind, positive, loving, passionate, honest, genuine, and fun. Tom, Liam, Kennedy, and Connor - you guys are a great family and through your strength, love, and humor you will be okay and you will make Mel proud! Love you guys!
