I received a kind note today from her sister-in-law informing me of Donna's passing away in 2018. My 2019 Christmas card had come back with a forwarding address in CA, which turned out to be her brother's address. (Thank you Irene, for your lovely note).
Donna was a colleague when I worked at Cortland from 1977-1983. Helping to decorate her Christmas tree during those years was always a favorite time for me. We both played the piano for the Threepenny Opera that was performed then (under Jim Palmer's direction). During those years, I was able to walk to her house from Brockway, where I lived. We caught up in 2014, when I was able to visit Cortland and stay with her.
She was so knowledgeable, talented and wise, with the greatest sense of humor and most humble attitude. And those Santa Christmas cards... priceless!
It was an honor to have known her!

My music career started at Cortland where I studied Music History with Dr. Anderson in 1979. I was happy to return to Cortland in '99 to play a guest artist concert during my first sabbatical from University teaching, and Dr. Anderson was in attendance. I can't believe it's been 20 yrs since then. The concert went well and I was very happy to see her again. Her impact on my musical development was integral to my life. As a University professor of music, I'm reminded how professors like Dr. Anderson can change a person's life.

Dear Anderson Family and Friends of SUNYCortland,
Just received word that Dr. Anderson passed away. She was my favorite professor at SUNY Cortland and inspired my work there. She was a super interesting speaker and I always wanted to get my PhD in Musicology as she did! My sympathies continue for you and God Speed Dr. Anderson

I am so sad to hear of Dr. Anderson's passing. She was the best professor I had during my time at Cortland. Not only was she dedicated to teaching, she had a wonderful sense of humor that enlivened her lectures on music history. I am forever grateful that I was able to learn from this special lady.

My deepest condolences to the family of "Doc A." I was saddened to just learn of her death when my Christmas card to her was returned to sender today. She was without question for me the best professor with whom I studied during my four years at SUNY Cortland. She was incredibly committed and so knowledgeable on so many musical topics. I took three music history courses with her, and my proudest academic achievement at Cortland was when she informed me that I was the first student to earn a 100 on one of her exams in the two survey courses. The semester I studied piano with her while my regular piano instructor was on sabbatical was my best experience ever studying the piano, and she introduced me to composers and pieces that challenged me and helped me to grow as a musician. I greatly admired the myriad ways she contributed to the musical enrichment of various communities through her teaching, performing, and research, and I always enjoyed her Christmas photos dressed as Santa. I last saw her at my 30th class reunion in 2011 and was looking forward to reconnecting with her in 2021. Donna has been a role model for me as a professor, and I feel so fortunate to have been her student. She will be greatly missed by many, but she will also continue to live on in our memories for all the ways she taught us and touched our lives.
Sincerely,
