Obituary of Alyce Casey Sawyer

On February 15, 2019, Alyce Casey Sawyer, 79, passed away peacefully with family by her side.

Born Alyce Susan Casey on January 30, 1940, Alyce was the daughter of Harold and Mary Casey of Scott and Homer. She graduated from Homer High School in 1957 with honors and participated in a variety of school activities to include sports and band. Alyce went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY at Buffalo and went on to teach Art at both Pittsford and Homer schools. She married Charles Sawyer, also from Homer, in 1963. Their full life together spanned fifty five years, living in North Carolina, where daughters Nancy and Betsy were born, Dallas TX, Washington DC, and back to upstate New York. At every stop Alyce always found time to volunteer to help with local charities. She loved art her chosen profession, theater, music, and sports, especially golf which she played often with her friends.

Alyce was a rock to her family who love her beyond words and will miss her dearly. She is survived by her husband Charles Sawyer, two daughters Nancy Sawyer of Syracuse, Betsy Whittey and her husband Stephen of Gloucester MA, her sister Rosemary Chapman of Cortland, a niece and nephew and many cousins.

Alyce who married Charles in St. Margaret's Church in Homer was a parishioner there throughout her youth, and again upon her return to Homer. During the decade she was a regular volunteer and supporter of the church.

Calling hours will be Wednesday 4-6 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln ave., Cortland NY, 13045. Funeral services will be Thursday 10:30 am at Wright-Beard Funeral Home with Fr. Paul Alciati presiding. Spring burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery, Homer NY.
