Obituary of John Anderson

John "Dick" Anderson, 96, of Cortland, passed away one week prior to his 97th birthday on February 23, 2019 at Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center.

 

John was a lifelong resident. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1940. He served with the US Army during WWII, serving in North Africa, Italy, Philippine's, and Japan in the 62nd Signal Battalion. He had been employed with the US Postal Service for 32 years until retiring then worked at Tyler's Cleaners. John was a member of the Cortland American Legion #489. His family will cherish his legacy for generosity and kindness to his family and friends. They will also remember his warm smile and happy demeanor along with attending many of his nieces and nephews school and sporting events.

 

Uncle Dick is survived by his nieces and nephews, Patricia (Richard) Edwards, Nancy Ball, John Davis, Judy Gorman of Buffalo, David and Diane Brown of Michigan, many great and great great nieces and nephews, as well as special friend Nelda Gay.

 

John was predeceased by his sisters Patricia Riley, Mary Jane Davis, and Elizabeth Davis, nieces and nephews Joanne Cortese, Norris Davis, and Michael McKenzie.

 

A calling hour will be held Wednesday 10-11 am with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated Wednesday 11 am at St. Margaret's Church, Homer NY. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Cortland NY. The Wright-Beard Funeral Home of Cortland is serving the family.
