Obituary of David W. Hess
Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David Wm. Hess, 86, of Homer, passed away April 25, 2020 at Crown Center Nursing Facility in Cortland. He was born August 29, 1933 in Cortland, the son of the late John R. and Eva M. (Leitch) Hess.
David was a lifelong resident of Homer, having graduated from Homer High School in 1951. He enlisted in the US Army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He attended CCBI in Syracuse, graduating in 1959 with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. He had worked at Smith Corona, Ames Linen Service, Wendy's Corp and he retired from Place Insurance.
David was a diehard Yankees, NY Giants and Syracuse Orange sports fan. David enjoyed doing crossword puzzles in pen. In his earlier years he was an avid bowler and enjoyed a good game of horseshoes. David collected many types of angels over the years. He enjoyed listening to Big Band music and watching classic movies as well as Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Over the years, David had donated many gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. David enjoyed attending his high school class reunions and catching up with old friends.
David was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. A gentle giant of a man and a man of few words, he was always there to listen, and would only offer his advice when it was asked for. David had a great sense of humor and that same sense of humor has been passed on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annemarie (Seidemann) Hess, his daughters: Beatrice (William) Duncan of Cortland, Felicia Evans of Cortland, Marita (James) Linnstaedter of Texas, and sons Christopher (Shelley) Hess of Texas, Paul (Maureen) Hess of Cortland , Philip Hess of Homer, and Thomas "TJ" Hess of Homer as well as 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his daughter Kathryn Canfield, his son Winfried Scholl-Hess, his sisters Marjorie Hess, Jeanine Collier and son-in-law John D. Evans.
