Mildred Blovsky Boronkay Horak, 94 of Cortland passed away on December 12, 2020 at Cortland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
On a cold March 20th in 1926 a little girl was born to Anna Rejhon and Frank Blovsky, and they named her Mildred Ruth. The place was a little farm located in Newfield, NY. Both parents came to America in the early 1900's from Czechoslovakia. Mildred was called Mimi all through grade school which was a one room school house at the corner of Sebring and Trumbull Corners Road. After the school centralized, the district purchased buses to carry students to the "new" school. However, while the new school was being built on Main Street in the Village, students attended the "old" school on Bank Street.
After graduating from high school in 1943, she worked on the family farm. This was during World War II so this type of work was needed at that time. In the fall of 1947 she started working as secretary to the Principal at Newfield Central School. She worked there for 37 years retiring as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools in 1984. She then worked for Tompkins County Court House as deputy county clerk for three years. After she retired she continued her studies at TC3 and graduated in the spring of 1994.
Mildred or Millie as most people know her, loved many sports and enjoyed playing many of them in her retired years especially golf. Just recently she decided to bowl and enjoyed that sport as well. During her retirement she spent many hours in her flower gardens, especially loving and tending her irises. She enjoyed showing irises at iris shows and won many blue ribbons.
She belonged to many organizations and was secretary of Area II of the American Iris Society, secretary of Premysl Otakar Lodge (Czech in Newfield), Czechoslovak Moravian Club in Binghamton, NYS Association of Education Personnel (School Secretaries), and an active member of St. Margaret's Church in Homer serving as Eucharistic Minister for many years and worked on various committees.
Mildred's first husband, John Borokay, passed away in 1979. She then met and married Karel Horak who passed away in 2000. She is also predeceased by her step-daughter, Sandra Marcin, sister, Mary Stiefel and brother William Blovsky. She is survived by her son, David (Kathy) Boronkay, step sons Roger (Sally) Horak, Byron (Kerry) Horak, Benjamin (Shirley) Horak and step son in law Alan Marcin and grandchildren, Jason Horak, Christine Horak, Emily (Paul) Feissner, David Horak, Chelsea Horak, Collin (Kaysi) Horak, Shannon Horak, Ashley (John) Auchampaugh, Nicholas (Marissa) Boronkay, Dawn Boronkay and Johnathan Boronkay. She is also survived by her nieces, Dorothy Stiefel and Linda (Raymond) Mancil and nephew Richard (Debbie) Stiefel and great granddaughters, Aleah, Alexa and Aubree Auchambaugh, Abigail Feissner, Julianna Boronkay, Eliysha Vanburen, and great grandsons Owen and Jackson Horak, Andrew Feissner, and Landen Hamilton-Boronkay.
