"You boys hungry?" was the sound of this gruff and gentle, hardened paratrooper. Those three words in the fall of 1996 embarked me and my friends on a 24-year journey with Robert "The General" Stevens and his entire family. A part of the West Point community is forever impacted by his generosity. Scores of cadets came to know him as, simply, "The General". I am so grateful for his invitation so many years ago. The trajectory of my life changed because of this heartwarming exchange.
Whenever new cadets came to the tailgate that his daughter and son-in-law led, Linda and Masoud, respectively, the new cadets were required to meet and salute The General. A little intimidation was created prior to the meeting and The General did his part returning a snappy salute, complete with a tough exterior and a firm handshake never breaking eye contact to really seal the ruse! Laughter followed quickly and he made us feel very welcomed and part of his la famiglia.
Those football Saturdays led to trips to NYC and trips to Cortland, NY. I was fortunate enough to attend the St. Anthony’s Feast in 1999. That was my first visit to his home. He met me in the driveway and walked me to the backyard in some kind of grand entrance to meet his entire family! He and I waved like proud dignitaries. Once again, The General made me feel welcomed and it never stopped for 20+ years.
I reflect back to the day I met him. I wonder if the morning of he knew something was going to happen. When he shaved that morning and was probably talking to his girl, Ms. Kay “The First Lady”, did he know that he was going to change peoples lives? Did he look at me and see something in me that I didn’t know about myself like most coaches often do? I like to imagine The General was well aware of his actions and saw all of this unfolding as part of some grand design. I’m just grateful that a cosmic force put me in his path. I’m grateful that this man who didn’t know me, didn’t look like me, didn’t know my story, exercised a little faith and planted a seed in me and others. I wish the world had more Robert Stevens.
Until we meet again, General. May your airborne spirit soar under the canopy of silken scarves and rest in the hands of the All Mighty. Be thou at peace..

R I P "Bobby" Stevens. A Great man made Men from teen-aged Boys. He taught us to get up when knocked down...stay in the game...Always give your Best effort. As a coach, and through his staff, he imparted upon us principles that would be followed for the rest of our lives.
I had the pleasure also of being an employee at the restaurant. I witnessed a True Wizard of the "flattop" grill.
Condolences to all the family and friends of this Great Man.
