Glenna Haines, 84, died March 7, 2012, at Cortland Regional Medical Center. The daughter of the late Romey and Bernice (Hersey) Johnston, she was born November 10, 1927 and grew up in Fort Fairfield, Maine. In 1947, she married the late Graydon Haines Jr. and they began a life of farming together. They moved to New York in 1954 and began farming locally in 1958 when purchasing the Cottrell farm on Route 41 in Scott. They were potato growers for many years and operated a pick-your-own strawberry business until 1987. Glenna was active in the community as a volunteer and served for many years as an election worker. She had a strong passion for standard bred horses. Glenna loved working on the farm, and enjoyed planting flowers and vegetables even after moving into the City of Cortland in 1987. Glenna was a farmwife and helped work and manage the business. Her life was dedicated to caring for the farm and her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Graydon, 1985. She is survived by her five daughters, Terry (Don) Butler, Cortland, Corinne (Tom) Crandell, Binghamton, Stephanie Greenfield, Cortland, Gilda (Mike) Votra, Marathon, and Millie Blaakman, Phoenix Arizona. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Randy Foster, Daron Foster, Jim, Colleen, Becky and Patrick Crandell, Carla Greenfield Hickey, Deborah Mason, Daniel Mason, Gregory Parmiter, and Jacquee Parmiter. She also has five great grand children, Kaidon Foster, Jessica Holden, Graydon Hickey, Alli Mason, Brittany Moser, and Kovelli Stevens. She is survived by a brother, Ralph Johnston, Maine, a sister, Marion Stuart, Massachusetts, and a sister-in-law, Janice Haines, McLean, a sister-in-law, Mary Haines, Florida, and a brother-in-law Gary Haines of Maine, as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank the staff and physicians at Cortland Regional Medical Center who have given exceptional care and attention during her illness. Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Lincoln Avenue, Cortland, on Saturday, March 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. A private graveside burial will be held. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Glennas memory may be made to the Scott Union Cemetery, c/o Elizabeth Parker, Countryside Acres, Homer, NY 13077.
