Obituary of Denton H. Rankin

Please share a memory of Denton to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Denton Howard Rankin "Denny" age 38, born on March 18, 1982 in Cortland, NY passed away on January 9th at Upstate University Hospital due to complications of spina bifida. Denny was known and loved by many people throughout his life. His persona was larger than life and his positive attitude was infectious and inspiring to everyone that came to know him. Denton had many health issues throughout his life leading to countless surgeries and hospitalizations. No matter what he was going through he always had a smile on his face and never uttered a word of complaints. Denton played the hand that he was dealt, with grace, humor, and courage making him an inspiration to us all. Denny enjoyed spending time with family and friends (both 2-legged and 4-legged as he had a passion for dogs and reptiles). He cherished his vacations that he took in the outer banks, surrounded by close family and friends. Denny enjoyed the opportunity to watch his niece and nephews play, as well as watching the birds and dolphins at the ocean. Another of Denny's favorite pastimes was watching sports with his family. He especially loved the Miami Dolphins, and Syracuse University lacrosse, basketball, and football. He also loved music and really enjoyed going to concerts. Denny may have never walked a day in his life but he sure did wheel the heck out of the streets of Cortland. Many people knew him from his trips downtown to socialize or watch a concert. Denny spent a lot of his free time playing video games on his phone, computer, or playstation with his friends, nephews, and brothers. Denton leaves behind a family full of broken hearts but wonderful memories. He is predeceased by his maternal grandparents William (Janice) Brangan, paternal grandparents (Verl (Charlotte) Rankin, and his father Douglas Rankin. He is survived by his mother and stepfather Vicky and Mike Lyman, brother Doug (Carrie) Rankin, brother Dustin (Brandie) Rankin, nephews Drew, Deegan and Dawson Rankin, niece Charlotte Rankin, and beloved dog Otto. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Contributions can be made to the Cortland County SPCA.
