Obituary of Elizabeth MacNeill

Elizabeth Hazzard MacNeill passed away on January 8 th . She was born on February 24, 1925 in Cortland,
NY, the daughter of the late Donald and Florence Goddard Hazzard of Cortland.
A 1942 graduate of the Homer Academy, she attended Syracuse Business School which merged with
CCBI that year. Upon graduation she worked at General Electric, in Syracuse which at the time was
involved in the WWII effort, making airplane parts. She then became a dental assistant for a Syracuse
dentist. Returning to the Homer area, she was hired as the first clerk of the board of education in 1946
for the newly formed Homer Central School District. She left the position in 1951 to raise a family after
her marriage in 1950 to John MacNeill of Homer.
The couple had three children, Allen of Ithaca, Billie of Homer, and Claudia (Jay) Caretti of Morrisville, 9
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and also a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, reading, family gatherings and genealogy. Her favorite activity,
however, was as a "spinning" tenor drummer in the Mohawk Valley Highland Bagpipe Band over a 24-
year span during which all of her family members also participated for many happy memories.
She was predeceased by her sister, Catherine (John Crosley) Marathon, Martha (Joseph Burgett) a
brother, Robert; and granddaughter Vanessa Caretti.
