It is with great sadness that we announce that Debra (Debbie) Smith passed away May 3rd from struggles battling several ongoing health issues. There will be a Celebration of Life, Friday May 14, 2021 at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home located at 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland, NY 13045. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to Noon. There will be a gathering for friends and family immediately following at Little York Lake. She was predeceased by her mother, Nyla (Phil) Thurston of Cortland, and father, John Thomas of Waverly. She is survived by her husband Robert and daughter Heather Smith of North Carolina. Her daughters Jessica Sherman and Mackenzie Smith of Cortland. Her sister Mary (David) Wolfe of Montour Falls, her brother Scott Thomas of DeRuyter. Grandchildren Brandon Thomas and Savannah Sherman of Cortland, great-grand daughter Luna Thomas of Cortland. Her Aunt Veda (Luke) Meyer-Castens of Elmira. Nephews Zachary Thomas of Morrisville, Chris Thomas of DeRuyter and niece Elizabeth Thomas of DeRuyter along with several cousins. Debra was born January 3, 1964 and was a nearly lifelong resident of Cortland. She worked in the medical field for several years. She loved her New York football Giants, enjoyed NASCAR, going kayaking and spending time with friends and family. Debbie was a good mother, sister, Aunt, a friend and was loved by many. She will be deeply missed.
