I knew Gene way before my son married Jen. I use to take my lawn equipment to him for repair. Saying Gene was a hard worker is an understatement. To him working at times was like being at a playground playing. As an artist admirer’s his paintings, Gene took admiration in anything he repaired. What I will remember most however is ability to fall asleep. I think he could be in the middle of a battle field and if was nap time he would go to sleep. I remember we were coming back from a Yankee Game on a bus and Gene was seated beside me. Everyone was full of libations from the game. The decibel noise range was off the meter, but Gene was fast asleep. “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.” RIP Gene

Gene’s knowledge about machinery could fill an encyclopedia. He was always ready, selflessly, to share and advise whenever I needed help. I will always be grateful. In this time of sadness, may his family be comforted by the memory of how Gene made the world a better place. Jim Weiss

I was not expecting what I saw in the newspaper. Students are not supposed to pass before their teacher. And Gene was just starting to get comfortable with referring to me by my first name instead of by "Mr. Sweeney." I had given him permission and explained that he had more than earned the right by attaining adulthood to see me as a peer. Old habits are hard to break. I suspect that much of it had to do with being raised by a mother who was a teaching colleague of mine and expected him to be a gentleman. Gene was just that.
Then, too, if you needed a part for something, Gene always knew exactly what kind it was, where to get it for you, and to present it in a timely fashion with a smile. That was my last experience with Gene, this past spring when I needed a part for a lawn mower. I am going to miss Gene when I come to the business that employed a good man. Good men are hard to come by. The world is diminished by his passing.
I offer my heartfelt condolences to Barb and all of Gene's family.

Gene assisted in teaching hundreds of teens to be certified farm tractor and machinery operators. He attended the 4-H National Tractor Driving contest in Virginia because of his skills and knowledge. You could explain to Gene what you needed to fix a mechanical problem and he would have an answer solving your need. Gene will certainly be missed.

Condolences to Barb and family. I was so surprised to see that Gene had passed away. I knew Gene from my years working at Key Bank in Homer, when Gene was a manager at Tractor Supply (I think). He was always pleasant but in a hurry. He always had a list of things he had to get done. (usually written on his hand!) Years later when I worked at Cortland Golf Driving Range, Gene
would come down periodically to hit golf balls. That was probably the only time he ever relaxed.
He always seemed to be helping someone out. In my mind he was always one of the "good guys." Rest in Peace Gene. You deserve it. Katie Quinlan
