POWERS, DAVID, A. of Depew, formerly from Cortland, passed away peacefully at home on
December 1st, 2021 following a long illness.
David was the son of the late Seth and Helena (Miller) Powers; also survived by step-mother
Thelma Powers; beloved husband of Sharon Laurell Powers; loving father of Brian Powers,
Jeffrey (Janet) Powers, and Michael (Stephanie) Powers; Cherished Papa of Alexander,
Megan, Logan, Addison, Molly, and Ellen; Dear brother of the late Joan (Jim) Nadge, Susan
Powers, and Marsha (Victor) Havran; also survived by step brother Thomas (Charlene) Powers;
Dear brother in law of Suzi (Arthur) Stiennon, Gregory (Mary Ann) Laurell, and Kim (Esther)
Laurell. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, December 12th between 11-1 at the Wright-Beard
funeral home in Cortland, NY which will be followed by a memorial service at 1. We ask that
masks be worn in the funeral home.
He worked several years in the banking industry and was very active in serving the Cortland
community. He served many years on committees for the United Way and the Cortland
Chamber of Commerce. David was the Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack 100 at F.S. Barry
school for 10 years and received the Silver Beaver award from Boy Scouts of America. He was
an active member of the United Presbyterian Church of Cortland for many years. David was a
volunteer fireman at the Homer Fire Department and also coached softball and little league
baseball teams.
The Elks organization was very important in David's life. He was past Exalted Ruler of Cortland
BPOE 748 and Homer BPOE 2506. He served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler and
many years as Chairman of the drug education program for the Elks lodges of the South Central
district of New York State. David was voted Elk of the Decade for 1974-1984 for Homer Elks
lodge BPOE 2506.
David was always motivated with the desire to help his family, friends, and community in all that
he did.
