Obituary of Pearl Handman
Please share a memory of Pearl to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Pearl Handman, 98, of Homer, NY passed away on February 7, 2022. She liked telling everyone that she was "one of eight children," the sixth child of Kalman and Julia (Lefkowitz) Weiss, and the first child in her family to be born in the United States.
Although Pearl spent most of her last decade in Homer, in her heart and mind she was a lifelong resident of New York City. Born and raised on Manhattan's lower east side, Pearl loved her city and took full advantage of everything it had to offer. Pearl was a lover of the arts, a fighter for just causes, and a loyal, generous friend. She was proud of her job as a school secretary at Charles Evans Hughes High School.
Pearl loved her family, and her family loved her. Pearl is survived by her children, Ann (Victor) Siegle of Homer and Paul (Eileen Lyons) Handman of NYC, her grandchildren, Josh (Annie Holden) Siegle and Lizzie Siegle, her one surviving sibling, Sylvia (Edward) Brinberg, and many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to thank the staff of the Elizabeth Brewster House for providing the loving care, hearty meals, and rich variety of activities that reinforced Pearl's belief that she had come to Homer for an extended vacation.
Pearl's burial will take place in New Jersey. A celebration of Pearl's life will take place in NYC in the spring.
To honor Pearl, please compliment someone every day.
