Obituary of Nahra Hage
Please share a memory of Nahra to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Nahra A. Hage, 96, of Cortland passed away on September 1, 2022, in Sayre, PA.
Nahra was born on January 1, 1926, in Lebanon to his parents, the late Abdo Hage and Catalina Nasser Hage. He left his parents and 10 siblings in Lebanon in 1948 to move to the United States to pursue a tailoring career. After working part-time as a tailor for a friend's dry-cleaning business and taking evening classes to learn English, his dream of owning his own tailor shop began to take shape. At that time, learning how to sew was an art that many local residents wanted to master, and because of his talent and abilities he was hired to teach tailoring classes for 16 years.
From Nahra's hard work and determination, The Hage Tailoring and Tuxedo Shop opened its doors and became a thriving business in Cortland for 50 years. What began as a business with just himself and only a needle and thread, grew to employ a full staff of tailors, including his brother Farris who also went on to have his own successful tailoring career. He drew strength from his family and traditions over the years. His wife, Jeannette, joined him at the tailor shop in 1961, and the couple worked side-by-side until retirement. In addition to his work as a tailor, he was a long-time member and past president of the Kiwanis Club.
Nahra is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jeannette; his children Rosemary Hage, Kathy Becker, and Michael (Lisa) Hage; his siblings Neb (Florie) Hage of Homer, NY, Josephine Haykal of Binghamton, NY, Hanna (Therese) Hage of Lebanon, and Nabiha Haykal of Lebanon; his grandchildren Kody Becker, Danae (Jimmy) Souzas, Andrew Hage, Melina Hage, great-grandchild Vasilios Souzas and many nieces and nephews.
Nahra is predeceased by his parents; his brother Farris Hage of Cortland, NY; two brothers and three sisters in Lebanon.
