Donald L. Hay,73, of Cortland passed away September 28, 2022 at the Cortland Guthrie Hospital. He as born November 21, 1948 in Cortland the son of the late Lloyd and Margaret VanPatten Hay.
Don was a lifelong resident of Cortland graduating from Cortland High School in 1966. After high school he began his career in banking with Marine Midland Trust Company. He then served his country for four years with the US Air Force during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. He returned to banking and went on to work for Dime Federal Savings and Loan (Syracuse Savings Bank), Cortland Savings Bank, then to CFCU. During this time he attended and graudated from Empire State College receiving a bachelor’s degree in Professional Studies. Don retired from Cortland County Area of the Aging.
Don was an active member of the community volunteering for numerous organizations that included the United Way, Boy Scouts of America, was a founding member and past Exhaulted Ruler at the Homer Elk’s Lodge, and past President of the Cortland High School Athletic Booster Club. Don had been a communicant of St. Mary’s Church since the late 1980’s.
He is survived by his wife of 52 yrs Susan Hay, his son Christopher (Kim) Hay, his daughter Traci (Stephen) Lian, his grandchildren Benjamin & Ethan Hay, Jayden, Kellen, & Connor Lian, his siblings Sandra Thomas and LeRoy (Laurie) Hay, several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his infant son Andrew, parents Lloyd and Margaret Hay, brother William Hay, and brother-in-law William Thomas.
Calling hours will be Sunday October 2 nd , 3-5 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045. The Elks Lodge of Sorrows Special Service will be performed by Homer Lodge 2506 at 5 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Church, Cortland NY. Burial will follow at the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
