Obituary of Donald R. Morgan

MSG(Ret) Donald R. Morgan passed away on October 17, 2022. Don was born 27 Jan. 1951, the son of the late Richard and Frances Morgan of Blodgett Mills. He attended grade school in Blodgett Mills and graduated from McGraw High School in 1969. While in school, Don was on the High School rifle team winning Most Valuable Player award in both 1968 and 1969. After Graduating from high school, Don entered the Army where he served for the next 20 years. He deployed overseas 6 times to Germany, VietNam, Korea, and Alaska and had 4 assignments in the states. In 1974 he met and married the former Marilyn White of Aberdeen, MD, and Cleveland, TN. He was twice awarded the Meritorious Service Medal as well as the Army Commendation Medal (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), the overseas services ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal (6th award), VietNam Campaign Medal w/3 campaign stars and the VietNam Gallantry Cross with palm while serving with the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal). While serving with the 9th Infantry Division at Ft Lewis, WA, Don was active with the Cub Scouts where he was the Webelos Den Leader and later the Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack 461. After retiring from the Army, Don returned home near Blodgett Mills and worked on the Dennis and Patricia Rew Farm for 9 years before purchasing his own farm in the Freetown area. After selling his farm, he continued to be active in the dairy business, helping neighboring farmers. Don was a member of the Virgil Methodist Church and past member of the Blodgett Mills Methodist Church as well as a past member of the Blodgett Mills Grange, Blodgett Mills Rod and Gun Club, the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association and the National Rifle Association. He had an interest in Astronomy and firmly believed in the existence of intelligent life on other planets in other solar systems in the universe. Don was predeceased by his wife in 2001, and sisters Janice Seager in 2014 and Jean Fish in 2015. He is survived by his daughter, Theresa (son-in-law Hassan Eladab) Morgan Ladeb, son David (daughter-in-law Dana) Morgan of Pheonix, AZ, grandchildren Sydney and Dane of Pheonix, AZ, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 10am to 12:45pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Inc. with a funeral service to begin at 1pm. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Blodgett Mills.
