Peter M. Sheridan, 80, of Cortland, NY passed away on January 4, 2023 at UHS Wilson Medical Center, Johnson City, NY. Peter was born October 27, 1942 son of the late Dr. Gerald and Helen F. Sheridan. Peter started working at Recreation Alleys till 1990 when he started purchasing the business, where he worked until his retirement in 2006. Pete made many friends over the years at the lanes. Some of his proudest moments were hosting senior PBA regional tournaments for 8 years. This brought many of the “who’s who” of Pro Bowling to Cortland. Pete had many memorable times with the sport of bowling. He bowled in 26 national tournaments, was a league secretary for over 25 years, and was a member of the Cortland Bowling Association. Pete loved most all sports. In his younger years and while in the army, he played on many of the best fastpitch teams in CNY. Pete was also an avid Syracuse sports fan. He was honored to be put in the CBA Hall of Fame, USBC Hall of Fame, and the State Bowling Hall of Fame. Pete graduated from Cortland High School with the great class of 1960. He went on to proudly serve his country with the United States Army as a Medical Corpsman. He served for 15 months with the 7th Medical Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, in South Korea. He proudly served as a driver for the Battalion Commanding Officer. Following his deployment, he worked for Ticknor Furniture until they closed in 1977. After retiring from Recreation Alleys, Pete worked several different jobs to keep busy, but his favorite was working as a courier for the Guthrie Cortland Hospital. Peter leaves behind his devoted wife of 59 years, Carol J. Sheridan. Together they raised 3 beautiful daughters, Deborah (John) Cook of Virgil, NY; Natalie A. Sheridan of Cortland, NY; Kelly (Santo) Giarrusso of Burgaw, NC. He is also survived by five grandsons, James (Jennifer) Cook of Homer, NY; Matthew Cook of Virgil, NY; Joshua Cook of Virgil, NY; Ryan S. Root of Cortland, NY; and Logan Giarrusso of Burgaw, NC; granddaughter, Peyton Giarrusso of Burgaw, NC; great-grandchildren, Jacob Cook, Landon Aiken, Mackenzie Robbins and Robert Robbins of Homer, NY; brothers James (Francee) Sheridan of Frankfort, KY; Stephen (Ann) Sheridan of Charlotte, NC; and sister Jane (Johnson) of Frankfort, KY and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Pete is predeceased by his brother Gerald H. Sheridan, sister Anne Hutchins, and several brothers and sisters in law and special friend Donald Loudon. Pete’s first love was his family and watching his grandchildren grow up. He will be greatly missed. Calling hours will be held at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., on Monday, January 9 from 4PM – 7PM. The funeral service will take place at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., on Tuesday, January 10 at 10 AM with a burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cortland, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Peter’s name to the VA Hospital in Syracuse New York.
