Obituary of Matthew Anthony Piazza

Matthew died unexpectedly January 6, 2023 while stationed in Honolulu Hawaii. He leaves behind his wife Megan, his sons Bode and Lyle, his parents Philip and Darlene, his brother Michael and sister-in-law Jackie and his nieces Cecilia and Fiona. Matthew was born on February 25th, 1988 and grew up in Tully NY. He was a gifted athlete and in particular excelled in downhill ski racing where he was a two-time junior olympian and in the sport of lacrosse where he competed at the Division I level for Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Matthew was commission at VMI into the U.S. Army in 2011 as a Logistician Officer. Matt was an American Patriot who had an unparalleled love of Country. He supported Special Forces in Forward Operating Base Shank in Afghanistan in 2014, and led heavy equipment/tank convoys in Eastern Europe during NATO exercises in 2017. Over his 12 years of service in the Army, Matt reached the rank of Major, and earned many unit and individual awards to include a Bronze Star for his bravery in Afghanistan. Matt not only leaves behind his extremely tight-knit family, but also many close friends that enjoyed his steadfast friendship. Matthew touched many lives throughout his life and was genuinely kind to everyone. He will be missed. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 5th 2023 at Heugas Alpine (Song Mountain) in Tully, NY from 2-4 pm. All who had a connection with Matthew are welcome to come to the Celebration of Life.
