Obituary of Michelina Barbieri

Michelina Mary Barbieri of Cortland, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home at the age of 92. Born, August 23, 1931, in Syracuse, Michelina was the daughter of Angeline (Sauro) and Frank Barbieri. Michelina graduated from Solvay High School in 1949, and then attended Parson’s School of Design in NYC to pursue her love of fashion and design. While in the greater NY area she met her husband Frank Barbieri (no relation), and together they had six children. Micheline’s career as an accomplished seamstress kept her busy, with her own dressmaking business, where she dressed many of the elite from Westchester County all the way to NYC, all while raising a family. After moving to the Cortland area in the 80’s she worked many years in alterations at Chappell’s department store. Eventually she retired to Florida for some sunshine and warmth but continued to work part time in bridal design. Despite her career of many years, her highest calling in life was being with her children. As a beloved mother, she left a legacy of faith, evidenced by her prayer life, and selflessness. Michelina is survived by her children Frank Barbieri (Carla), Luise Ismael, Joanne Esparza (Marko; deceased), Marianne Giannascoli, Albert Barbieri (Kari), Emil Barbieri and grandchildren Matthew Giannascoli, Devon and Darion Ismael, Nicolas and Lucas Barbieri, and great grandchild Kai Giannascoli; and siblings Josephine Clark, Leonard Barbieri, Anne Dalton, Frances Coughlin. Predeceased by her husband Frank and sister Olympia Yamayoshi. Her family would like to thank her caregiver, Jennifer Jackson, for her wonderful compassionate care and Hospicare of the Finger Lakes.
