James F. “Jim” Twomey, 79 of Cortland passed away on December 1,2023, at his home after a lengthy battle with Cancer. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Jim managed his illness with strength and grace;never giving up hope. On his final day, he was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 11, 1944, in Cortland a son of the late William and Margaret Cashion Twomey. Jim attended St. Mary’s school before transferring to Cortland High School. Jim held various jobs throughout his life; his favorite being his bread route at Durkee Bakery. He started working for Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1977 as a trackman. From there he moved to Conrail as a machine operator, retiring in 2012 from Norfolk Southern Railroad. Jim served his country with the United States Navy from 1961-1964 on the USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865). After retirement, Jim started “Jim's Eagle Express Delivery” where he cleaned out several estates in the area, moved multiple Cortland residents to their new homes and hosted yearly garage sales at his residence. Aside from his love for his family Jim was an avid fisherman and Buffalo Bills fan. He enjoyed boating on Otisco Lake and golfing with his best friends; Chuck Sheridan, Frank Natale and Dennis Brooks at Willowbrook Golf Club. For the past 3 years Jim enthusiastically took part in a Friday night card club at his home with the girls; often outbidding them with only a Bare Ace. He also enjoyed his Wednesday night pitch league with the Twomey family and other community members. Jim could often be seen making his rounds around Cortland with his best buddy; his dog Walter, hanging out the window. They both made friends wherever their travels took them. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Denise, eight children, Jeff (Sue) Twomey, Carlene Twomey, Lee Armstrong, Amy (Matt) Armstrong, Donald (Mary) Van Deuson, Barbara (Joseph) Leo, Jim (Sharon) Van Deuson, Wendy (Dave) Van Deuson, several grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. Jim is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
