Michael "Mike" Proskoczilo, age 81, of Cortland, NY, peacefully ascended to the Lord on January 7, 2024. Mike was born in Rowno, Poland to Mitrofan and Paszka Proskoczilo, whom he was preceded in death. He grew up in Homer, NY and graduated from Homer Central High School in 1962. After graduation he immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to proudly serve his country.
Mike was a devoted husband to his wife Maria of nearly 50 years; son-in-law to Aniela Kuras, a loving father and grandfather who looked forward to hunting, reading, and enjoying time with his family.
At the height of the Vietnam War, Sergeant Proskoczilo bravely served with distinction beginning his first tour in 1966 with the 1st Battalion 4th Marines and second tour in the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps in 1968.
As a civilian, Mike primarily worked as a welder, beginning at Champion Sheet Metal and continuing at other Cortland-area businesses for over 30 years.
Mike is survived by his wife, Maria Proskoczilo, his three children and seven grandchildren, Johnny Proskoczilo (wife Brandy, grandchildren Josephine and Daniel) of Waltham, MA, daughter Bernedette Minnella, MD (husband Chris and grandchildren Ethan, Mary, and Chloe) of Pittsford, NY, and Aniela Hansen (husband Jeremy and grandchildren Emma and Abigail) of Holly Springs, NC.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30am on February 16h, 2024 at St. Mary's Church, 46 North Main Street, Cortland, NY, followed by burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, 4101 West Road Cortland, NY. Our nation's gratitude will be expressed at his service. Semper Fi.
