Obituary of Richard B. Beagle

Richard (Dick) Bush Beagle, 87, of Binghamton, passed away peacefully after a short, aggressive battle with Alzheimer's. Born on October 27, 1936 in Oneonta, NY, he was the youngest child of Howard Elmer Beagle and Helen K. Bush Beagle. He was pre-deceased by his parents and older siblings Howard, Phyllis, and Donald Beagle. He was also pre-deceased by his wife of 44 years Starr E. Gunning Beagle, whom he loved dearly. Richard is survived by his four sons Darien R. B. Beagle and wife Karen of Binghamton, NY; Darryl A. J. Beagle and two daughters, Hailey and Grace of Milford, MA; Marquis S. A. Beagle and fiancee Tina Barbee of Waxhaw, NC; Garth A. G. Beagle and wife Jennifer, son Simon and daughter Shaleena with granddaughters Bella and Naia, of Scotts Valley, CA; and long time friend and helper Barbara Multon of Binghamton, NY. In his early years, Richard very much enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping while living with his parents at their general store, "Beagle's Grocery" in Mt. Vision, NY where he helped operate the store. He was a member of the Army National Guard and was very active as a Scout Leader for the local troup. When his parents passed, he continued to run the store where he met Starr and they began their family. After selling the store and moving more remotely in the country to a farmette, he began working for Sears Roebuck while Starr helped run the farm, mostly horses. He continued to work for Sears for over 25 years both in Oneonta, NY and Binghamton, NY where he managed many departments. They moved several times and were the original "flippers" of houses; building, fixing, and repairing while having their family of 4 boys and taking care of their farmettes. Living very much like the "Waltons" they lived off the land, heating with wood, very large vegetable gardens, canning, freezing, hunting, etc. In his lazy time, he enjoyed country drives, antiquing, and watching TV until he passed out in his "Archie Bunker" green chair. After Sears, he had job experiences as a distributor for Drake Bakeries, working for Walmart, and real estate sales. As his boys grew up and moved away, and his wife of many years passed, he loved his dogs Teddy, Cricket, Goober, and Dolly. He continued to love gardening, garage-sales, work shop projects, and spending time with long-time family friend Barbara. As a hard-working, providing father who was insightful, crafty, and often had a quick-witted dry-humored comment he will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the staff at Crown Park Nursing for their help, patience, and caring. There will be a private memorial service.
