Doris Still, 95, passed away in the presence of loved ones on January 17, 2024 after a period of declining health. Doris was born Doris Mae Wemmell on May 4, 1928 to Dr. Alexander and Mrs. Clio Wemmell in Brooklyn, NY. She attended Adelphi Academy and Lassell Junior College where she majored in Interior Decoration. In 1949, Doris married Kenneth Still and they had one daughter, Donna. They settled in Tappan, NY and commuted together into New York City for many years. Doris worked for Meller and Company and later at Shapiro and Company as a secretary. In 1973, Doris became a full time devoted caregiver for Ken after he suffered a major stroke and did so until his passing in 2004. She then moved to Cortland full time to be closer to family. Doris took great joy in attending family dinners, activities, concerts and the great grandkids' sports of all kinds. Doris enjoyed all sorts of creative endeavors. She was a member of David Beale's painting class and was a member of the Cortland Arts Council. She was a prolific artist and poet. She received recognition for her beautiful paintings, and her poetry could be seen routinely on the Cortland Standard poetry page,and was also featured in the Rockland Journal News. Doris is survived by her beloved daughter Donna Franco and son in law Ray Franco of Cortland, her grandsons Stephen (Janine) Franco of Cortland, Brad (Meg) Franco of Portland, Oregon and Brian (Amanda) Franco of Auburn, NY. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren: Max, Lauren, Miles, Julia, Anna, Emerson and Vivian Franco. In addition she is survived by a niece, Janice Hoffman and many grandnieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Kenneth Still, her parents, a sister Clio Hoffman, brothers Alexander Andrew Wemmell Jr. and Newell Wemmell, as well as two nieces, Elaine Kirk and Virginia Morthland. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Anthony DiGiovanna who provided years of skilled medical care, the staff of Walden Place, who provided companionship, support and care during Doris' residence there, as well as the staff at Misty Glen more recently. Thanks too, to the congregation of the United Presbyterian Church for their outpouring of cards and concern over the years. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 27 from 4 to 6 PM at Wright Beard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the United Presbyterian Church on Sunday, January 28 at 2 PM. A graveside service will be held at Glenwood cemetery in the spring time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Presbyterian Church or the Cortland Arts Council.
