Obituary of John R. Bishop Jr.

John R. Bishop, Jr., 92, of Cortland passed away October 10, 2024 at the Guthrie Cortland Hospital. He was born April 7, 1932 in Port Chester, NY, the son of the late John R. and Catherine Conley Bishop Sr.
John was raised and educated in Port Chester, after relocating to Syracuse, NY, he graduated from St. Anthony's in Syracuse. After his education he enlisted with the U. S. Navy serving active duty from 1955-1959 and was honorably discharged yet continued to service his country in the Reserves. He worked for many years for National Grid in the Syracuse and Cortland offices retiring as utilities manager. He was a communicant of St. Leo's Church in Tully and most recently St. Margaret's Homer NY.
He was a long time member of the Elks Club, the Cortland Country Club, Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Cortland Chamber of Commerce and a past President of the Thunderbird Club at Song Mountain and participated in many other organizations.
He enjoyed skiing, golf, fishing, camping, traveling with MaryAnne and with family.
He is survived by his wife of seventy one years MaryAnne Bishop, his children Kathleen (John) Magruder, Karen (Gregory) Bertolini, Kevin (Debra) Bishop. Grandchildren Errin Magruder (Jarid), John Ryan (Megan) Magruder, Aurora(Brian) Riopelle, Ryan(Tori) Bertolini, Deanna Bishop, Kaitlyn Bishop, great grandchildren Anthony,Nolan,John, Chase, Hadden, Finn, Adeline, Lydia, Damien, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be Sunday 1-3 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 10 am at St. Margaret's Church, Copeland Ave., Homer NY. Burial will follow at St. Leo's Cemetery, Tully NY.
