I am still so grateful to have worked with Kathy and gained her friendship. Knowing her was a true honor, each conversation was honest and she lived and loved with her whole heart. Her kids, grandkids and adoring husband completed her and she would truly was a treasure here on earth.

Gene,
My sincere condolances! Kathy and I went to basic school together and we instantly became best buds as we were the 'odd couple' (the only 2 women in the class)
She will be missed by her LE group, her friends and her loving family.

I’ll never forget growing up in New Kingston with all the gang. Kathy and Jill had our girls’ clubhouse in their back yard, and, oh what fun we had in that place! And taking our horses to the Walton Fair with 4H….
I felt like the Russell house was my second home, always welcoming all the kids of the neighborhood.
Kathy was such a warm and loving friend, even later in life. Every time I went back to visit, Kathy and Gene would always take a day to meet up with me to have lunch and reminisce about our lives.
She was such a proud and loving mother and grandmother; always showing her support in everything they did.
Dear Jill, I’m thinking of you, I know how devastating this must be to you.
Gene, Brett and kiddos, I’m so sad for you all,
Hugs and prayers
Gay Poppe

Q: How did you meet Vanessa?
A: I first met Kathy in about 1980 or 81. I owned a newspaper distribution business in Cortland ( The Post Standard) so I was on the road overnight.
1 early winter morning the bundle of papers I left at the Convenient food store on Groton Ave. Was stolen.
I saw Kathy driving by on patrol and flagged her down!
Unfortunately for the kid that took them his foot prints in the snow led to the house next door!
Off Kathy went and soon a I had my newspapers back!
I saw Kathy in action quite a bit and lived just down the street from her & Gene.
Played softball against Gene, Derrick worked for me as a carrier.
My heart breaks for you Gene, Brett and all the kids!
Kathy was always a straight shooter ( and I just don't mean gun wise ) she never hesitated to email me if she disagreed with something I did while on the city council. We might've disagreed on some things but I appreciated her reaching out and the respect I have for her will never recede.
Again to the family there will always be pain but Kathy will always be with you.

My sincere condolences to the family for the loss of someone so dear. She certainly had an amazing life and career, and has definitely passed on her drive and enthusiasm for life's endeavors to her children and grandchildren. May she rest in peace.

Bama was like a second mother to me. I’ve made countless memories with her. She loved all of her grandchildren to death. One of my favorite memories with Bama was when we traveled to Arizona.
I’ll miss you always.

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free!
I followed the plan God laid for me.
I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all…
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss…
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life’s been full, I’ve savored much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief –
Don’t shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.
Our Deepest LOVE of Heart and soul

Q: How did you meet Vanessa?
A: I met Kathy when we rented their apartment upstairs in the mid 70s. As 2 struggling young families we would often pool our change together to get a pizza and sit up playing cards at night after our boys went to bed. Kathy was a good friend and confidant for me during those years.

I never had the opportunity to meet with Kathie, the sister of my best friend Janet. I was able to hear the many stories told to me about many wonderful days spent with Kathie.
May her family remember all of the good times spent with her

We tried hard, over the years, to gether every year. I will always remember the trips to Cortland and spending time with the family. Kathy was a fabulous cook and could bake killer pies. I remember helping out with Gino when he was a baby so Kathy could get some rest. Annie and I planted a menory garden and Kathy supplied all the beautiful flowers. My sister, Kathy, was so full of l love for everyone and everything. She was my friend and I will miss our long talks.
