Charlotte C. Gilbert, 88, of East Homer, passed away September 27, 2011 at the Cortland Care Center. She was born July 10, 1923 in Cortland, daughter of the late Oliver and Anna Nelson Carley, Sr.
Mrs. Gilbert was an area resident all her life, graduating from Marathon Central School in 1941. She attended Cortland Business Institute and was employed by the First National Bank of Cortland for over 15 years. Charlotte married Melvin Gilbert May 19, 1945; they were married for nearly 25 years until his passing in 1970. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of the East Homer Methodist Church for over 60 years, member of the Albright Grange for over 60 years, and a former member of the Homer Eastern Star. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, baking, listening to Lawrence Welk and watching Syracuse basketball games.
She is survived by her daughters Margaret (Loren) Martin of Beaver Falls NY, Melinda (John) Sciera of Livonia NY, her sons David and Douglas Gilbert both of East Homer NY, her grandchildren Melvin and joseph Gilbert, Suzanne Morgan, Scott and Brian Sciera, Kelly Gilbert, great grandchildren Benjamin, Ian, and Makenzie Gilbert, Oliver Morgan, sister in law Jane Carley, two nephews and a special niece Deborah Carley, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband Melvin, infant son Richard, and brother Oliver Carley, Jr.
Friends may call Friday 7-9 pm at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland NY, 13045.
A memorial service will be held Saturday 1 pm at the East Homer United Methodist Church, 2640 Rt. 13, with Rev. Nelson Stafford presiding. Burial will follow at the East Homer, Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the East Homer United Methodist Church.
