Obituary of Sara C. Hull
Please share a memory of Sara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sara C. Hull went to be with her Lord on June 7, 2011 after a few days at Cortland Regional Medical Center. She was born Sara Cornelia Long on October 30, 1918 in Sardis Mississippi and was the daughter of Andrew Curtis and Evia (Herring) Long. Sara was one of twelve children who with their parents worked a large farm in a share crop arrangement. Sara met her husband Gerald in 1943 when he was stationed in a German-Italian Prisoner of War Camp in Sardis. Sara and Gerald moved back to Cortland after their son Donald was born in 1944. Gerald began working for Ames Printing and bought the business from Ralph Ames after Ralph became ill. Sara was an integral part of building the business, regularly going back to work after supper. Gerald set the type and ran the presses while Sara did the collating, wrapping and paperwork. Sara was a committed member of the Memorial Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school, Release Time and Daily Vacation Bible School. She loved the children as her own. Sara also was a volunteer cook for many years at the Cortland Bible Club Camp. Sara became a Deaconess and was the President of the Women's Baptist Association. She led the adult bible study group. She was a hard working member of the Garden Club for many years. Sara also chose to work as a caretaker for elderly women from the church, witnessing to them her faith in redemption. Sara's husband Gerald was an avid hunter and fisherman and Sara joined him in loving the outdoors and roughing it. Gerald fished the upper country of Quebec when very little of the land had been logged yet, so they traveled 35 miles by boat with two portages for a two week stay. Sara and Don accompanied him each summer as did many families from the church over the years. While hunting one year, Sara and Doris Eldridge our pastor's wife, both got deer on the opening day and had the deer hanging in our oak tree when Gerald got home empty handed. After Sara and Gerald retired to Florida in the mid 80s she worked as a caretaker for the father of a family from Italy who maintained a home there. By this serendipity Sara was afforded a month-long trip up Amazon River and a Cruise exploring Alaska and its glaciers. Sara got up every morning convinced her Lord had a purpose for her that day and it was her job to find it out. Sara is predeceased by her husband of fifty-one years, Gerald in 1994, her mother, father, ten of her brothers and sisters and her granddaughter Holly (JoAnne Cordner). Sara is survived by her son Don, her granddaughter Kimberly Sharpe (Kevin) of Truxton, her great-grandchildren Matt and Lisa Sharpe, and her sister josephine Large (Ted) of Darlington, S. Please consider a donation to Cortland Regional Medical Center Adult Day Care Center where Sara found love, friendship and activities to help fulfill each day.
I am very sorry for your loss. I am a teenage volunteer in the Adult Day Care at Cortland Regional and I enjoyed spending time with Sara. She always made everyone smile, especially when she would sing along to the music that was playing. She had a tremendous impact on my life and I will never forget her. I hope I can live my life in a positive manner that is similar to Sara's. I offer my greatest sympathy.
