Philip A. Timmerman, 79, of Virgil NY, passed away April 14, 2010 at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. He was born October 24, 1930 in Virgil NY, the son of the late Vernon and Myrtle Overton Timmerman.
Phil was lifelong resident of Virgil. He served with the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he took employment with the Town of Virgil for over ten years then with the State of New York for over 30 yrs. Phil was a certified crane operator who enjoyed all types of heavy machinery, especially plowing snow. One of the larger projects he was involved with was the construction of Interstate 81. Phil remained active during his retirement serving as sexton of the Virgil Cemetery from 1994 until present. He enjoyed camping and traveling, having visited all fifty states. Phil was a lifetime active member of the Virgil Volunteer Fire Dept.
He is survived by his wife of 56 yrs Donna Jones Timmerman of Virgil NY, son Darcy (Wanda) Timmerman of Berryville VA, daughters Robyn (Donald) Fisher of Philadelphia PA, Michele (Fred) Kahn of Syracuse NY, 6 grandchildren Matthew and Leah Timmerman, Tanya Purvis, Danielle Fisher, Eric and Megan Kahn, three great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Phil was predeceased by his parents, brother Arnold Timmerman, sister Helen Harendorf, and grandson Robert Bo Fisher.
Calling hours will be held Saturday 9:30-10:45 am with funeral to begin 11 am at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home Inc., 9 Lincoln Ave Cortland NY. Burial will follow at the Virgil Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Virgil or the Virgil Fire Dept.

Phil was one of the cornerstones of any good community.Very seldom appreciated for the weight he supported. He is often in my thoughts. No words can ease your loss but you must take comfort in knowing Phil was a wonderful man. Michael Elliott
