Obituary of Marjorie J. VanHensbergen

Marjorie J. VanHensbergen, 91, died peacefully at Strong Memorial Hospital on
Sunday, February 28, 2010, with family by her side.
She was born May 25, 1918, in Theresa, N.Y., daughter of Irving and Mary Ann
Ridsdale Scott. As a teenager her family moved to Castleton-on-Hudson, N.Y.,
where she graduated from high school and Mildred Elly Business School in Albany.
Marge married Raymond T. VanHensbergen in 1938, moving to Cortland in the early
1950s. She was employed at Ames Linen, Cortland Asphalt and in later years she was a proprietor with her husband of Port Watson Recreation Alleys.
She treasured life, family and her many friends. Marge was noted her ability to entertain,
reflecting a special talent that was unique and appreciated by all who knew her.
A long-time member of the Cortland County Club she enjoyed golf, cards and most
importantly good conversation with the girls. She was active for many years in local
bowling, a past president of the Cortland Womens Bowling Association and an inductee
of the Associations Hall Of Fame. She was a member of the local professional secretaries organization and long associated with BPOE #748, Loyal Order of Moose, and Order of the Easter Star.
Marge was predeceased by her husband in 1981, a daughter, Linda and a son, Scott.
She was also predeceased by her sisters, Gwen Weijola and Elizabeth Scottie Ames and a brother, Irving Chet Scott.
Surviving are her daughters, Jean Bascom (Gordon) and Lynn Meldrim (Thomas), her son, Richard, a sister, Barbara Scott, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and a memorial gathering for the family and friends will be held in the spring. Wright-Beard Funeral Home is assisting the family.
