Obituary of Kathleen Riter

Kathleen J. (McCormick) Riter, 77, of Homer, NY passed away Tuesday, June 20 th , 2017, at the Cortland Regional Long Term Care Facility.

"Kay" was born June 17th, 1940, in Cortland, the youngest daughter of George and Mary(Lyons) McCormick. Kay was married to the love of her life, Sheldon Saunders Riter, who predeceased her in 1988.

She was employed at New York Telephone and later at SUNY Cortland. She was an avid sewer and quilter who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was also one of the biggest supporters on the athletic field whether rain, shine, or snow, first cheering on her sons, Matthew and Michael, and later her adored grandchildren, Mattie and Mitchell. In her free time she followed almost every sport in existence on TV.

Survivors include her loving sons, Matthew (Jenna) Riter and Michael (Michele Harris) Riter;grandchildren, Mattie and Mitchell Riter; brother George (Joann) McCormick; Sister in law, Barb DeTomaso; Cousins Judy (Jerry) Yacavone and Terry (Ray) Stevens; Longtime friends and confidants, Shirley (Richard) Clark and Nancy (Alan) Salisbury; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Patrick and Jack McCormick; and sister, Carman Gigliuto.

Friends are invited to call from 9:30 to 11am on Monday at Wright-Beard

Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave, Cortland. N.Y, with a service to follow at 11. Interment will take place at Scott Union Cemetery in Homer, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Key Bank, 1 North Main Street, Cortland, NY, 13045 c/o the Sheldon Riter Memorial fund to honor Homer athletes.
