Obituary of Charles P. Sheridan
Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Charles "Chuck" P. Sheridan of Cortland, New York, died suddenly of cardiac arrest just before his morning swim on Sunday, September 23, 2018. He was 74.
Born on September 22, 1944 in Cortland, N.Y. Chuck was the son of the late Melvin Sheridan and Elizabeth Kiely Sheridan O'Shea. He was the oldest of six, and is survived by his sister Kate (Tom Buggs) and his brothers Joe, Michael (Karen), Tim (Kathy) and John (Mary), and his mother-in-law Olga Smith.
Chuck was a 1962 graduate of St. Mary's School. He traveled to India with the Peace Corps in 1966. When he returned, he worked for Child Protective Services in Syracuse. He then served as a US Army medic in the Panama Canal Zone from 1967-1969.
He was an entrepreneur at an early age, selling Christmas trees and delivering newspapers. As a young man, Chuck worked briefly in computer sales and investing, but found his true professional calling in 1973 when he opened his store, then named Crown Jewelers and Distributors. Initially a catalog showroom, Chuck honed the business over the years to focus mainly on jewelry. His mentors were Al Marsted, Bud Rigg Sr. with the Industrial Development Agency, and Fred Compagni.
Chuck was the proud owner — and the heart and soul — of Sheridan's Jewelers for 45 years. He loved to serve his community. He truly cared about other people. He loved to tell and hear stories. He had the ability to talk to anyone and he instantly put people at ease.
He survived an aortic dissection in 1996, gaining a second chance at life that made him grateful for every moment. He went on to have three more major heart surgeries, and recovered fully each time. He always kept a positive outlook and encouraged others to do the same.
Chuck was an avid golfer, swimmer, kayaker, world traveler. On any given weekend, you could find him mowing the lawn at the County Farm, planting black walnut trees, rehabbing the buildings, and dreaming up future projects.
His greatest love was his family. He and his wife, Cheri, still loved each other dearly after 49 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Matt (Lisa) and Kerry (Michael), his grandchildren Dylan and Cormac Phillippi, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. He is deeply missed but his spirit lives on in the community he adored so much.
Calling hours will be held from 4-7 pm Thursday September, 27 at Wright Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave., Cortland, NY 13045. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
