Derek was a very sincere and down to earth human being. He did what was right, regardless of inconvenience to himself. Very selfless. Indeed that is conveyed easily through the time I spent with him. Truth and honesty, always knew what you were going to get. Thanks Derek, you are missed.

My condolences to the family. Derek was my son's (Christopher) hockey coach when he played for the Cortland Hockey Association many years ago. He was a great mentor and friend to all the players. He enjoyed teaching them to be better human beings. It was truly a fun experience. He will be missed by all that new him. Sincerely, Lynne Van De Weert

Nicole, Gene, Aunt Kathy, Brett, Harrison. I love Derek Barnes. I find it impossible to remember any part of my childhood without picturing Derek. Before Tyler was born, I grew up as an only child. Derek was my big brother and best friend. Our parents were cops, and his home felt like mine. Derek and I were most at home when the police scanner was always playing in the background 24-7, and we would play Atari/Nintendo/Sega and watch Cops to fine tune our instincts, as we assumed we’d follow in our parents’ noble career.
Derek and I were lucky to share a brief moment on New Year’s Eve. And what I saw that night gives me the only comfort I have at the moment. It was so good to see Derek so in love and for it to be so obvious that Nicole adored and loved him. Happiest I’ve seen him.
Nicole, Katie and I will be there for you and Cole and Harrison.

Derek was one of my best friends as a child. He was so upbeat and so funny - We were silly together. We traveled to Ceder Point, OH once as kids to hit the best amusement park in the world and we had the greatest time. It was an amazing road trip. I loved going to his house and staying up too late, playing cards and ordering Pont’s wings as young men. I have so many hockey stories with him in them. He was our goalie.
My thoughts and condolences go out to his family. You were all a bright spot in my life. I am sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Paul

No words I write can fill the hole in your heart from being broken and torn by the loss of a Son, your child. We all pray we go before them, our children.God wanted him, to join with him. We know not why, and we question our faith sometimes, it's our nature. Remain strong in the Lord...pray...he will answer...he will assuage your heart, your grief, and pain. Belief and faith is all. Love....and memories. Jeffry

Derek came into our lives when our son Eric worked at Royal Nissan. He and Eric have stayed friends from that point on. Then he started dating our good friend's daughter Nicole. We were so happy for both of them. Derek always helped his customers out and did it with professionalism and a smile. He helped our son Brent to lease a car a year ago and remained a close friend to our family. We were blessed to have shared even a short part of his life. Hold tight to your memories all of you and know that he is always looking down on all of you. Sincerely,
Tom, Cheryl, Eric and Brent Michales

So incredibly sorry for your loss. Please know that Derek touched many lives in so many positive ways. Mine included. He was a great friend and provided me advice and comfort when I needed it, when I was having a hard time dealing with cancer. He always seemed to have a joke or smile for whatever the problem was. He always would tell me to "stay positive" and to "remember to live!". His advice and our chats provided me with relief when I was struggling.
Derek was also a great resource and friend with our car club as well, I know that we all enjoyed our many car talks and shows he was able to attend. His kind, gentle nature and smile will be missed by us all.

I am so devastated by your loss, a terrible tragedy happening to your entire family, and words seem so ineffective at a time like this. I cannot fathom having the sudden loss of one of my 2 children as you are now suffering through. I know the strength of the bonds of friendship, the unity of family and the arm of our Lord and Savior will help you through the pain and suffering. In that, I hurt with you. May God now be Derek’s close friend and companion above and share his Love on the family Derek has left here until there is a reuniting once again down the road. For now, you surely have some forever memories. Andy

We have known Derek for many yrs. He and our son David have been best friends
all of their lives. When they were younger, if my son wasn’t over there, Derek
was over here. They both grew up to be exceptional young men. My son will miss him very much, and as for us, we feel as if we have lost a second son. Our prayers
will be with you all at this time, and may the Lord watch over you when you need him most.

While I only got the pleasure of seeing Derek every couple years at family reunions, I sincerely looked forward to our chats. They were always full of fun stories that we had experienced and our senses of humor gelled so well! He was easy to talk to and always left me smiling and happier than the moment before our talk. One thing I know for sure, he loved his family dearly and I know he will be the best guardian angel for Nicole, Cole, Harrison, Gene, Kathy, Brett, Annie, and Gino. He will be missed greatly, but not forgotten. RIP Derek❤️

Although I did not know him for a very long time, I realized his great stature paled in comparison to the size of this heart. My most recent image of him was of him folding his arms in to fit into the back seat of a car for a test drive with pair of customers. He closed the door carefully with his hand and smiled. He reminded me of Mr Incredible, such a little car for him, but no complaints. He will be missed and fondly remembered by many.

We are not supposed to bury our children. There is nothing as tragic or as heartbreaking. We are thrust into a society we never wanted to be a part of, one that we prayed we'd never know firsthand. And we are forced into a new role as one who has lost a child. You will never be the same person you were before. You'll walk, one foot before the other but it will never feel quite the same. They say it's your "new normal". It may be new but it sure doesn't feel normal. Days will continue to come, one after another and we continue because of and for those we still have. It might get easier, but there will be days, years from now when it's as raw as the very first day. I pray you navigate these next few days with love and support of friends and family. Love, Stephanie

My memories of backyard shenanigans, riding down MainStreet with rap music blasting in the MINIVAN (like all cool parents do), being his #1 & Erika being his #2 (cherry chapstick), Goldschlagger, texting across the table from each other, laughing and joking til the wee hours, watching Derek sprinting and hurdling dogs when my smoke alarm went off while our dinner was cooking & sooo many more ......
