I used to see Jim sitting on his front porch on Clinton Street when I walked by. Always friendly. Always asked about my folks or siblings. Not sure, but I believe he may have taught my sister and youngest brother music. I have had to cut the frequency of my walking the past two years due to health problems, and hadn't seem him in a while. I'm so sorry to hear about his passing. My sincerest condolences to the family.

My fondest memory of Jim is of how he used to sit on the front porch at the Academy Street home in McGraw playing his clarinet! Sending thoughts of sympathy to Jane and the rest of the family!

Jim totally saved my musical path (I'm sure he and Donna Yaccavone teamed up on this effort) having brought me back to band after a year away from band, half way through 7th grade after a negative experience in my previous district. Gratefull for that am I. Without that, my life surely would have been much, much different - everything from academic/career path to who I married. Made myself a life in music as a player which brought my wife and I together - all because of Mr. Ferris in 7th grade.
Also, family may be pleased to know that a horn he sold to a Homer and Ithaca College classmate of mine is now in the hands of a very talented young man studying jazz at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Rather prestigious. In music circles, band specifically, there is a strong belief that the "spirit" of a player lives on in their instruments as they pass from owner to owner. Jim's legacy lives on in this way with this kid, and his horn could not have found a better home.

My deepest sympathy to the Ferris family . My daughter Kristin was his music student in Junior High. Just the other day I was telling that the Jazz Band at the JrHi was so professional . He saw talent and helped bring that talent out. He brought music to the JrHi halls!!!!!
