Obituary of W. Stephen Harrington

William Stephen "Steve" Harrington, 83, of Cortland, NY, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024, at his home on Melvin Avenue. Born on February 19, 1941, in Cortland, he was the son of Reginald and Gladys Harrington and was a lifelong resident of the community he loved. He was predeceased by his sister, Sondra Stark, with whom he shared many fond memories. Steve and his wife, Sandra "Sandy" Jones Harrington, were married on June 8, 1963. Throughout 61 wonderful years, they built a life filled with joy and happiness, lovingly raising three children together: Kimberly McMasters (Don), Rebecca Weber (Matt), and Matthew Harrington (Allison). Steve began serving on the Cortland County Legislature at its inception in 1974 and continued for 30 years, spending his final 6 years as its esteemed Chairman before retiring in 2003. His commitment to the betterment of his community left a lasting positive impact on Cortland County. He was the proud owner and operator of Harrington Brothers Music Store on Central Avenue, a family business founded by his father and uncle in 1929. Under his leadership, the store remained an integral part of downtown Cortland, continuing a family legacy that spanned 96 years. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Steve was always ready with a joke or funny story to make those around him laugh. He knew how to enjoy life to the fullest and shared that joy with everyone he met. Steve had a great passion for travel, embarking on numerous trips with his family and friends. Together with Sandy and their children, he explored many parts of the world, creating lasting memories. He also enjoyed traveling with his sister Sondra and brother-in-law John Stark. In later years, he and Sandy took pleasure in spending winters at their second home in Englewood, Florida. He is survived by his cherished wife Sandy; his loving children Kimberly McMasters (Don), Rebecca Weber (Matt), and Matthew Harrington (Allison); and his adored grandchildren Karlee Rush (Jake), Andrew McMasters (Emily), Robin Weber, Meredith Weber, Stephen Weber, Nora Harrington, Leila Harrington, and Emelia Harrington; and great-grandson Finn Harrington Rush. Steve is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Wright-Beard Funeral Home, located at 9 Lincoln Avenue, Cortland, NY 13045. A burial service for family and close friends will take place on Monday, October 14, 2024.
